Javanese green peafowl
(Pavo muticus muticus) |
Husbandry: |
Compared to the Indian peacock
there are two major differences. The green Peafowls are not hardy for
the middle European winters and they are not loyal to the current
location. For this it needs a well insulated cot which can be heated
in winter time. A closed aviary has to be
directly enclosed to the cut. Other wise the peafowls can fly away. |
| |
The temperature for true Green
Peafowls shouldn't be less then 7 °C. As soon as the temperature is
outside lower then 7 °C the have to stay in the cot, which has to
heated if necessary. |
| |
The chant of the green peafowls
is less noisy compared with the Indian Peacock. That's why it is
easier to keep them in a residential area. The volume of there chant
don't needs so much tolerance from the neighbours. Compared to the
Indian Peacocks, the green peafowls they are crying much less. With
the end of the mating time they almost completely silent. |
| |
| |
During the mating season, the
Green Peafowl cocks are much more aggressive as the Indian Peacocks.
Due to the aviary it is not possible for the cocks to avoid each
other. This means it needs a separate aviary for each adult cock. If
the animals are able to see each other in the different aviaries you
have to install blinds. Otherwise the cocks are getting aggressive. |

Cot: |
As described above, the cot has
to be well insulated and heat able. The Green peafowls have to be
trained to sleep inside of the cot, because in the winter season the
have to stay inside anyway. |
The cot has to have an adequate
size and should be bright and should have light. Because you have to
consider that during the winter time the animals have to stay inside
for a longer period. |
Green Peafowls can fly better
then Indian peacocks, which increases the risk of an accident inside
of the cot. After a traumatic moment it could happen that one of these
valuable animals can die. If possible the roof should be padded with
styrofoam. |
Green
Peafowls are also
like to sleep in a high position, that's why the perch
should be arranged min. 2 m above the floor.
It should be considered, they will always be able
to come up but to come down they need enough space to fly down. |

Feed: |
As the Indian peacocks it also
very easy to feed Green Peafowls. As long as there are outside in the
aviary they will eat grass and many other things which they will get
with the pecker. We are only provide them additionally some wheat and
grain mixture for chickens. |
During winter time when they
have to stay inside of the cot we provide them additionally some salad
and fruits. |
One or two times per week we give them ground bones to make sure that
they will have enough lime and protein. |
From time to time we will give the some goodies like mealworms etc.
This we will give them only by hand, because then it is easier to
catch them if it is necessary. |

Breeding: |
Due to the heated cot during the winter time, the
hens are starting earlier to lay eggs compared to the Indian peacocks.
A Hen is laying 5-6 eggs into a ground dell and is breeding them
steady in 28 days. Peafowl hens are good mothers, they are leading the
chicken nearly one year until to the next breeding. Already after few
weeks you can see the sex of the chickens. |
The hens
can start already in April to lay eggs and at this time it can be
still to cold for them to stay all the time outside. Due to this you
have to provide the hens a possibility to lay inside of the cot. |
| |
The cocks and hens of Green
Peafowls are having nearly the same coloured plumage. That's the
reason why it takes much longer until you can see the sex of the
chickens.
