|
Husbandry: |
We are having our Indian Peacocks in a cot with
attached aviary. We are taking care, that all our peafowls will sleep
during the night inside of the cot. During the day we frequently open
the door of the aviary and then they can run free.
This has the benefit if we once are not staying at home we know they
are all safely inside of the aviary. |
|
|
| |
Peafowls can have a very big
cruising radius and we also have neighbours. With this solution we
have to control when and where they are. This can also avoid conflicts
with your neighbours. |
|
|
| |
Before you will have peacocks
you should consider that these animals are having a very noisy chant.
It could happen that your neighbours feel disturbed. If this could
happen you should not consider to keep Indian peacocks or any other
mutation from. Because all of them are having the same noisy chant. |

Cot: |
The Indian peacocks and all
derived mutations are hardy, because of this there are no special
requirements for the cot. The cot should be dry and-draught free.
Additionally it should be not possible for predators like fox to catch
them during the night.
Peafowls are like to sleep in a high position, that's why the perch
should be arranged min. 2 m above the floor.
It should be considered, they will always be able to come up but to
come down they need enough space to fly down. Otherwise it could come
to an accident and the animals can get a severe injury. |

Feed: |
To feed the peafowls is very
easy. If they are running free they will search for the most of
the feed by themselves. We are only provide them additionally some
wheat and grain mixture for chickens.
One or two times per week we give them ground bones to make sure that
they will have enough lime and protein.
From time to time we will give the some goodies like mealworms etc.
This we will give them only by hand, because then it is easier to
catch them if it is necessary. |

Breeding: |
The Hen laying 5-6 eggs into a ground dell and is breeding them
steady in 28 days. Peafowl hens are good mothers, they are leading the
chicken nearly one year until to the next breeding. Already after few
weeks you can see the sex of the chickens. The hen chickens will loose
more and more the juvenile plumage and will come equal as the mother.
Breeding in the nature is very dangerous for the hen. We are always
preparing inside of the cot a breeding box. At the front side we are
covering this box with twigs. Up to now they always have taken this
simulated spinney.
